The new version of Fileshifter is here
The new major update to Fileshifter is here. After a lot of work behind the scenes and intense testing by the beta team, everyone is finally satisfied. This is Fileshifter 1.7
New features in version 1.7
Public links
Fileshifter can create unique expiring links directly to a file. This enables you to send allow external people access to certain files without exposing the file to the general public. These links contain an encrypted key giving temporary access to a specific file. You decide how many times the link can be accessed before expiring and who to give the link to.
Public files
Fileshifter 1.7 also takes this one step further and now includes a special public folder. Any file you upload to that folder is publicly available without logging in. This is very useful for showreels, press material or other files that should be available publicly.
Improved security
Over 90% of the source-code for Fileshifter has been revised, optimized or re-written. Also, all underlying frameworks have gone through massive improvements. All this combines to make this the most secure version of Fileshifter.
Faster
Optimizing most of code means Fileshifter now handles large numbers of files significantly faster. Projects containing thousands of files is no problem and is handled with lightning speed.
New upload widget
The upload widget has been replaced by an improved one, making uploads both faster ans more secure.
Extended administration
The administration section has been improved. You now have full control over users and their privileges.
So what exactly is Fileshifter?
In short, Fileshifter enables you to share large (even huge) files with your clients over the web. This may not sound like something new as there are hundreds of freely downloadable applications for this purpose. However, Fileshifter offers a unique approach to this problem.
The system was designed specifically for small companies working with large files. In fact this is exactly how I and my colleagues work every day. Fileshifter addresses the need to manage large media-files and to receive rapid feedback and approval over the internet.
The design focuses on ease of use. Everything from administration of users and premissions to uploads and downloads were designed to be natural and self-explanatory.
Do you work with audio-files, video-files or other large files?
Do you use ftp to transfer your files?
Do you often send CDs and DVDs to clients?
If so, then Fileshifter is for you.
Background
Fileshifter came about because of what one of my clients asked me. He makes lot of commercials and other film and video work. He asked if I could find him a file-sharing system that was free or at least inexpensive. I found several hundred possible web-applications and I also installed and tested about 50 of them. It was obvious that non of them would meet his needs. Either they lacked any form of security or had much too complicated administration features. On top of this, none of them handled larger files well - a general problem on the web.
As I could benefit from such a system myself I came to the conclusion that I would have to develop a system of my own. Fileshifter is the result of my efforts. All further development will be coordinated closely with users of the system in the hope that it will soon be a prefect tool for all of us.
Availability
Fileshifter is available in two forms. You can purchase a license and install it on your own server or any hosting solution you prefer. Alternatively you can rent space on my hosting server. This reltal plan is available because most hosting companies charge you a lot of money for the amounts of data that Fileshifter usually manages. At the time of writing, a hosting service will typically provide between 100MB and 1GB of space. This will not get you very far when you are sending DVD-size projects back and forth.
